Hangar6 Acceptable use—Terms and Conditions

There are a variety of policies related to Hangar6 use. We've broken them into several categories below. When you use Hangar6, you agree that you have reviewed these policies, and that you will abide by them.

Usage: who may use the space and when

  • Hangar6 is available to active members in good-standing who have completed all required safety training/certifications.  Members must have a current valid identification card and must pass safety training prior to accessing the space.
  • In special circumstances, non-members may tour the space. Special permissions required for minors, requiring adult supervision.
  • Hangar6 usually opens 8AM to 5PM with the last thirty minutes of the day reserved for clean-up and stopping of projects. The current hours are listed on the Hangar6 home page.
  • Certain equipment in Hangar6 may be reserved using the Hangar6 booking calendar, When equipment is reserved, other users should not use it.
  • The space is primarily used for working with plastics, composites and metals, with a minimum of wood materials. paper/cardboard. In most cases, you will be able to provide your own materials; in others you'll need to buy materials from us. 

 Courtesy: what do we expect of you and what can you expect of other users

  • Members are responsible for returning equipment to the appropriate storage containers, reporting broken equipment, and cleaning the common use area after working in the area. Failure to do so may result in loss of access to the facility. 
  • Hangar6 is not responsible for anything left behind, so you should be sure to take your materials with you when you are done. If you notice another member forgetting something, you should let them know! Lost and found items can be turned into the Shop Manager.
  • Since we don't allow headphones for safety reasons, we do allow users to play music at a reasonable volume and with reasonable attention to whether other users are bothered by it. If your music is bothering others, please turn it off or lower the volume as appropriate.
  • If you observe another user working in a manner you understand to be unsafe, you may politely offer assistance, but if your help is not accepted please take your observation to Hangar6 staff who will determine whether and how to intervene. If you observe an emergency, please notify Hangar6 staff immediately.
  • If you realize a piece of equipment is broken and is not labeled as such, please notify staff so that we can both flag the item as unusable (or remove it) and commence repairs.
  • The culture we want to support is one of safety, cooperation, and creativity.

Safety

Please note that if your behavior is unsafe, or we determine you are using machines for which you have not completed training, we reserve the right to revoke your membership.  We would prefer to never impose this penalty.

  • Hangar6 patrons must review the instruction guides for each piece of powered equipment that is desired to be used and attend training and pass a proficiency test on the same equipment. Schedule training with Shop Manager. 
  • Safety glasses are to be worn at all times in Hangar6. A supply of safety glasses and hearing protection is available in the space, please return safety glasses and hearing protection after use.
  • Appropriate clothing must be worn in the facility; this includes closed toed shoes (no sandals), no loose cuffed clothing around the wrists, no dangling necklaces or bracelets (necklaces can be tucked into a shirt).  
  • Long hair must be pulled back so that is does not dangle in front of equipment or get caught in equipment. This also applies to long beards.
  • General usage and safety guidelines will be posted at the entrance of Hangar6 and specific safety issues regarding each piece of equipment will be posted at specific equipment stations. 
  • Powered tools in our space are largely for working with plastics, metals, composites, and wood. Please see Shop Manager before working with dust-prone materials such as wood. 
  • Food is prohibited in Hangar6. Bottled drinks, such as water etc is allowed only in designated areas.
  • If you are having trouble with the equipment, please contact a staff member. 
  • The use of headphones in the facility is not allowed but use of speakers is O.K.
  • All start-up and shut-down procedures for each piece of equipment must be followed every time. Do not leave soldering irons on and unattended, even for a few minutes. 
  • If the room is at maximum capacity, we won't allow more people in.
  • In case of a medical emergency call 9-1-1 and then notify Hangar6 staff of the situation. 

Legal Considerations

  • As a condition to membership, each applicant shall provide proof of a commercial general liability policy in the amount of $2,000,000 or greater issued to the business/organization applying for Hangar6 membership, stating that First Flight Venture Center is an additional insured to protect them against liability claims for bodily injury and property damage arising out of premises, operations, products, and completed operations; and advertising and personal injury liability.
  • All Hangar6 users must comply with all rules, procedures, and restrictions, including the acceptable use policy.
  • We won't knowingly let you violate copyright laws and licensing agreements. 
  • Hangar6’s computers and tools may not be used for advertising or lobbying.
  • Hangar6 is not responsible for damage to personal computers, nor for the loss of data or information, nor for liability that occurs from the use of the internet connection, software, or hardware.
  • Hardware or software on the Hangar6 computers are managed by staff. Modification requests will be considered, but users are not allowed to make those modifications themselves. 
  • If a member damages any Hangar6 equipment, that patron will be subject to repair charges, up to and including the price of replacing the item. 
  • All fabrication equipment and products are provided by Hangar6 on an "as is" basis, without warranties or representations of any sort, expressed or implied, including, but not limited to, warranties of merchantability or fitness for any purpose. 
  • Hangar6 cannot guarantee confidentiality of designs, nor specific delivery times for objects being printed. 
  • Digital fabrication equipment, including computers and tools in Hangar6, may be used only for lawful purposes. No one will be permitted to use digital fabrication equipment to create material that is:
    • Unsafe, harmful, dangerous or an immediate threat to the well-being of others. (Such use may violate the terms of use of the manufacturer.) 
    • In violation of another's intellectual property rights.  For example, using equipment to replicate someone else’s designs or articles of manufacture may infringe the copyright or patent in those materials. 
  • Hangar6 reserves the right to refuse any requests to use its digital fabrication equipment, unless users agree to abide by the policies and procedures listed above. 
  • Users of Hangar6 agree to this statement on intellectual property:  "I warrant that I am authorized to use the applicable files, data, images, or any other materials (collectively “Content”) in Hangar6 and that the use of the Content will not infringe upon any third-party’s copyright, patent, trademark trade secret or other proprietary or intellectual property rights."

 


 

Hangar6 - Prototyping Safety Guide

We at Hangar6 strive to create a safe and healthy environment for all to work in. The following information will help you achieve this goal while minimizing risk to yourself and others.

Failure to follow safety policies, rules, procedures or directions from Hangar6, Shop manager or authorized individuals may lead to disciplinary action, removal from the facility, revocation of privileges to use the facilities, and/or serious injury.

Training and Access

• All who wish to utilize the Hangar6 Prototyping facilities must sign the Safety Training Form BEFORE they can participate in any hands-on activities.

• Every individual that comes in contact with any tool, equipment, or related material must complete the Safety Training as well as any specific equipment certification and have appropriate training for each piece of equipment used. There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this requirement. Register for Hangar6 access is contingent upon completing safety/certification training.

•Do NOT prop any door open, silent alarm may be activated. All doors must be kept closed and locked when the room is unoccupied to help keep unauthorized access from occurring as well as minimize odors and ventilation issues. Any individual found to have knowingly granted access to an unauthorized individual will be held liable to the maximum extent allowed by law and Hangar6 policies, and may have all privileges revoked without refund or notification.

• Access requests will only be approved by Hangar6 Shop manager after all forms and training have been satisfactorily completed.

Safety Planning

• Always have more than one-person present when working with machinery or hazardous processes/materials.

• Do not work when impaired by illness, drugs, alcohol, lack of sleep, or other impairments that may affect your judgement or safety.

 • Personal safety is typically of more concern when fewer people are around in the evenings and weekends. Always be aware of your surroundings, know who is and is not around you. Keep your ears open by keeping music low and not using headphones. Consider threats/hazards for each activity and address any safety concerns before proceeding.

• Users are expected to incorporate health and safety planning into their processes while in the Hangar6 prototyping space.

Before use

• Users must be properly protected with appropriate goggles, masks, ear protection, etc., during any hazardous activities while working in any of the Hangar6 spaces.

• Loose fitting clothing that is not secured, hanging jewelry, or other entanglement hazards are not allowed. Closed toe shoes and pulled back hair are required in these rooms at all times.

• Users may not use mechanical, electrical, or other equipment or supplies without prior training and instruction in the proper usage and safety procedures.

• Use of equipment or procedures not listed in this guide is prohibited without consent of the Hangar6 shop manager or authorized individual.

• Any questions or comments regarding safety issues in the facility should be addressed to the Hangar6 shop Manager.

Equipment use and operation

• ALL EQUIPMENT: Safety glasses must be worn at all times and by all individuals in the vicinity where work is being performed. Long hair MUST be kept in a secure manner, away from moving parts, flames, and equipment so as not to get caught or snagged. Proper training and safe guards are required. Loose clothing is not allowed, as it may pose a safety hazard. Improper use, or use other than as intended may be unsafe and is prohibited.

• HAND TOOLS: Hammers, screwdrivers, pliers, etc. Although not traditionally considered as dangerous, hand tools still pose a threat to user safety. Do not use damaged tools, or tools with signs of abnormal wear. Use tools only for the intended purpose (Screwdrivers are not pry bars). • SANDING: Do not operate the sander with your face at the same level as the belt/pad. Upon completion, sander and surrounding area must be thoroughly vacuumed and cleaned of debris.

• DRILL PRESS: Drill presses can be potentially dangerous machinery if not handled correctly. When using the large drill press, the work must be pinned with vises and c-clamps to the bed of the drill. Surrounding students must be warned prior to engaging drill. Be wary of kickback. Never try to stop a piece of material that has been snagged by the drill. Simply turn the machine off and stand back until rotation ceases. Upon completion, drill press and surrounding area must be thoroughly vacuumed and free of debris.

• SOLDERING: Soldering is a potentially dangerous activity if done improperly. Avoid breathing fumes and solder. Operate the tool in a responsible manner so as not to burn yourself or others and keep flammable materials away from the soldering area. After you have finished soldering turn off all equipment. Clean up the area after soldering utilizing a wet sponge with at least 3 rinses. Wiping area once will NOT be sufficient to clean all residue from surfaces. Failure to clean properly could result in contamination issues. Return all tips and other accessories to the appropriate location.

• 3D PRINTERS: While 3D printers are considered generally safe. Users should not touch the filament extruder during or shortly after any heated print or warm up period. Prints of unauthorized, illegal, or harmful items will not be tolerated. Printing of food containers, or food related products, should be thoroughly investigated and may not be completed with ABS or colored filament. Always confirm each step of the process is safe and will not cause later health concerns. Please read owner’s manual prior to use. Any alterations or non-standard printing must be pre- approved by the Hangar6 Shop Manager prior to printing.

• SPRAYING: Spraying of any kind is prohibited in this facility. All flammable and combustible liquids and gasses must be stored in a yellow flammable cabinet when not in use. After any work sessions all flammables and combustibles must be returned to flammable cabinets. Lockers or open shelves are not acceptable storage for flammable or combustible liquids or gasses. NO EXCEPTIONS! Written approval is required from the Safety Officers prior to any flammable materials being used at Hangar6.

• MSDS: There are no chemicals or other materials requiring Safety Data Sheets in the facility at this time. Chemicals and related materials cannot be stored or used in Hangar6 without the consent of the Shop Manager and the Safety Data Sheets being added to an MSDS file to be maintained at Hangar6. All solvents and corrosives must be labeled and stored accordingly.

• DAMAGED EQUIPMENT: If a member damages or breaks a tool or piece of equipment, he/she must immediately report it to a Shop Manager. This is imperative for the safety and stability of the lab. Mistakes are obviously understood, but persistent negligence will be met with severe consequences. Failure to report damaged equipment greatly increases the likelihood of injuries. In the event of damaged equipment, it is mandatory that the user put a sign on the broken equipment indicating the malfunction, the date/time, and the identity of the user.

Facility

• Food and drinks are not allowed to be stored or consumed in areas where equipment is operated.

• Housekeeping (clean work areas) is to be maintained to provide a safe and cooperative work space. Aisles and exits are to be kept free of slip, trip and fall hazards. Bench tops are to be free of storage and clutter.

• Extension cords are allowed for temporary use only and must be put away at the end of work periods or daily, whichever comes first, also no cord shall be routed through a doorway or other entry point, except as approved by Shop Manager.

• No equipment should be left operating without constant supervision. Always supervise 3D printing for the initial 5 to 10 minutes and regularly monitor throughout the printing process.

• Sharp objects, such as Exacto knife blades, utility knife blades and saw blades must be disposed of in an approved “Sharps” container, never the regular trash.

• Wall Installations/Mountings must be pre-approved by Hanager6 Shop Manager. If in doubt, ask first.

• Never stand on anything other than a ladder or stepstool to increase your reach. Climbing on chairs, stools and tables frequently leads to falls and injuries.

• Nothing can be hung or stacked closer than 18” (in the vertical dimension) to a fire sprinkler. Do not hang anything from any pipes, sprinkler heads or conduit. If you need to hang objects get approval from the Shop Manager first.

• Pets and animals are not allowed in buildings. Service animals for persons with disabilities are only permitted in compliance with the law. Please consider service animal safety and comfort in using these rooms/equipment.

• No smoking inside the building or within 20 feet of any doorway. No alcohol is permitted in any Hangar6 space, except as approved, in writing, by the Shop Manager. Illegal drugs are strictly prohibited.

 


 

Hangar6 - Shop & Equipment Safety Rules

General Shop Safety

Be wide awake, and alert. Do not operate machines when tired, ill or in any altered state.

Know what you intend on doing, and what the machine will do. Think through an operation prior to performing it.

Before turning on a machine make all necessary adjustments. Some operations or adjustments may require your instructor’s approval.

Never adjust or remove safety guards unless you have your instructor’s permission.

Use safety devices such as push blocks, feather boards & push sticks.  Some operations may require special jigs or fixtures.

Keep work surfaces and machine tables clear of project materials, stock & tools.  Also keep floors free of scrap and debris.

Allow machines to reach full operating speed prior to introducing the work.

Feed work carefully and only as fast as the machine will easily cut.

Maintain approved margins of safety specified for each machine.  This is the minimum distance your hands should ever come to a cutting tool while in use.

Shut off dull or out of adjustment machinery immediately, and inform Hangar6 staff.

When operating machines, start and stop the machine yourself.  When someone is helping you be sure they clearly understand what their role is.

Full attention while operating machines is of the utmost importance!  Do not distract others operating machines & be sure you are not distracted while operating a machine.

Stay clear of machines being operated by others.  See that others are out of the way when you are operating a machine.

Once having completed an operation, turn off machine. Allow machine to stop prior to setting up another cut or leaving the machine. Never leave a running machine unattended.

Machines should not be used for trivial operations -- especially small pieces of stock.  Do not play with the machines. 

Do not crowd or hover near the operator while waiting to use a machine. 

If a machine is improperly working, shut off power immediately and inform instructor.

Shop Equipment Safety

Table Saw: Margin of Safety = 4”

Be certain that the blade is the correct one for your work and that it is sharp.

The saw is equipped with a splitter (riving knife) and a guard. Use both, unless there is good reason not to.

The blade should extend 1/8” to ¼” above the stock being cut.

Stand to one side of the blade, opposite the fence, and do not reach across it.

Stock should be surfaced and one edge jointed, prior to cutting on the table saw.

You must control the work with either the fence or a miter gauge (never both).

DO NOT CUT STOCK FREE HAND.

Use only new stock, which is free of warp, splits, and knots.

Make adjustments to the blade, only when the blade is stopped.

Don’t allow scraps to gather at the blade. Remove them with a push stick.

Clear special set-ups, re-sawing etc., with the instructor prior to powering up.

The operator must control the feed and speed of the cut. Assistants attending the “tail off”, or “catching” should only support the work, not push or pull the stock.

Dado set, or any special blades should be removed and packed up after use.

When you complete your work, turn off the saw, and wait for the blade to stop. Clear the table of scrap, return the blade to a neutral position and reset the guard.

Radial Arm Saw: Margin of Safety = 6”

Hold stock firmly on table and against fence for all crosscutting.                            

Keep anti kickback device and guard in place.

After completing a cut, always return the saw to rear of the table. Do not remove stock until saw has been returned.

Shut off the saw and wait for the blade to stop prior to making any adjustments.

Know that the blade has stopped prior to leaving the saw.

Keep the table clean and free of scraps/sawdust.

Prior to ripping or other special setups, secure approval from your instructor.

Band Saw: Margin of Safety = 2”

Prior to power up, the blade should be properly adjusted and guard doors closed.

Keep the upper guide assembly adjusted to ¼” above the work.      

Prior to feeding the work, let the saw reach operating speed.

Hold the stock flat to the table.

Feed the saw only as fast as the teeth can easily cut the material.

When possible plan so as not to back out of curved cuts.

Do not cut radii so tight that the blade is twisted.

Stop the machine prior to backing out of a long, curved cut.

Round stock should not be cut unless held safely by a jig or hand screw.

Turn off the machine at once if you hear a clicking noise. This indicates a cracked blade. If a blade breaks: shut off the power, and step away until machine stops.

When you have completed your work turn off the power. If a machine has a brake, apply it smoothly. Leave the machine only after it has stopped running. 

Drill Press: Margin of Safety = 2”

Bits with feed screws should not be used. Use only approved types of bits.

Affirm that the speed setting is correct for your work.

Holes over ½” should be bored at the lowest setting.

Mount bits securely in chuck’s center at full depth. Remove key the immediately.

Position the table and feed stroke so the bit cannot strike the table.

When drilled through the piece a wood pad should be placed beneath the work.

Work that is to be held by hand should be center punched.

Small, or irregular, pieces should be held by clamps or special fixtures.

Feed the bit smoothly into the work. When a hole is deep

Always have your instructor check special setups.

Table & Portable Router: Margin of Safety = 4”

Minimum length of material = 2”

Secure bits in the chuck to a depth of no less than ½”. The base must be tight.

Confirm that work is securely clamped and will remain stationary during routing.

Set router base on work or template with the bit clear of the work before turning on power. Hold firmly when turning on the power to overcome starting torque (Portable Router only), feed smoothly through cut in correct direction.

When cut is complete, turn off motor. Do not lift router until the motor stops.

Always ask your instructor to check special setups before proceeding.

Unplug motor when mounting bits or making major adjustments.

Make a test cut in a piece of scrap of the same thickness as the project

 

Wide Belt Sander (Surfacing Sander, or Time Saver): Minimum Length: 20”

Always check grit of sanding belt prior to powered up machine and adjust setting according to chart on infeed side of machine.  Never force material into machine, let the conveyor regulate the rate at which work enters machine, likewise, never pull work out of the outfeed side of the machine – let the conveyor regulate the exit rate of material.  If material gets stuck inside machine, power off machine and get assistance from an instructor or authorized personnel. 

Never stand directly behind work being fed into machine. 

Sliding Compound Miter Saw: Margin of Safety = 4”

Be certain that the blade is the correct one for your work and that it is sharp.

Be certain work is secure to fence, using pin down clamp(s) as needed.

Extra care should be given to short pieces, as they can become projectiles if not properly secured.  If using clamps, a ghost cut should be made with power off to ensure the blade will not touch the clamps during cut.

How to Avoid Kickback on Table Saw:

The table saw is the backbone of a woodworking shop.  It is a versatile machine and serves many functions.  This machine is also one of the most dangerous in the wood shop.  Great care and concentration should be given when operating this piece of equipment. The chief safety concern when using the table saw is kickback. 

Kickback occurs when the work piece is allowed to become trapped or bound between the blade and the fence, causing it to be projected back toward the operator with great force potentially resulting in material damage and injury to the operator.  Never interrupt or distract the table saw user with a question or sudden motion, as this can break their concentration. Never walk directly behind a table saw in use.

The following methods should be used to minimize the potential of kickback:

  • Stay out of the path of kickback
  • Material MUST be joined and planed on at least 2 perpendicular faces prior to cutting on the table saw. With planed face down against table, joined edge against fence
  • Push material through and beyond the blade
  • ALWAYS control the material between the blade and fence regardless of size
  • Push material simultaneously against the fence and down on the table while pushing forward
  • When appropriate, use splitter (also called the riving knife) to prevent wood from binding on blade immediately after being cut
  • Never cut material freehand (without a fence) on the table saw.
